Blackwater

fot. Harebare Shashin

Blackwater is a kinetic installation that is a result of my two month residency in Sapporo, Japan, run by S-AIR. please watch the video documentation.

Blackwater (2013)
Traveling Art, 500m Gallery, Sapporo / 1920x200x5 cm, black fabric with white undercoating.

About the installation:
Installation is made out of 352 individual pieces that are all the same hight but different in wide (from 20 cm to 140 cm). I used a very special black fabric that has a nice white undercoating and is mostly used for manufacturing umbrellas, water resistant tents and rain jackets. The shape of the pieces is that of a simple pocket put upside down with the front part a little longer and loosened. The structure is kinetic, so it is sensitive to air currents and reacts to the strong winds that are put in motion by approaching and descending metro trains. The wind blows back and forth through the corridor where the work is hanged and it looks a bit like two people arguing. But the most important thing is, that this blowing wind is raising parts of the structure to reveal whats hidden. And for this brief moment when the draft escalates there is a chance to have a peak at things that are for the most time concealed.

This work and exhibition was part of a 2013 S-AIR residency program.
Supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs Government of Japan in the fiscal 2013.
